Step Two: Draft The Story

First off, I need to say how excited I am have to have 33 fellow participants in our challenge! I hope that all of you who want to join the facebook group have been able to do so. If you have had any issues, please let me know.

How did week one go for you? This week I spent some time at my local bookstore, looked through my PiBoIdMo ideas from last year's challenge, and I think I am ready for phase two.

Hopefully after a week of consideration you have picked your project and are ready to start drafting your story....

Picture Book Dummy EbookThroughout the challenge, since I am super green at all of this, I will be leading us back to  the kidlitart blog for some great guidance and information from Wendy Martin.  In this blog post for step two Wendy offers wonderful direction on things to keep in mind as we being drafting our story and gives a number of reference titles which will be worth purchasing or borrowing from your local library.

This writing portion of the challenge lasts for four weeks (until Feb. 10th) which seems like a long time. But writing is one of those things where it helps to write and set it aside for a few days, then come back to it and tweek and tweek and tweek. So don't get caught up leaving your writing until the last minute, because of course this is the foundation for the remainder of the challenge!

If at any time in the next four weeks you feel like a group critique would help, please feel free to make a request on our facebook page. I came across this article on setting up a group critique at 'Once Upon A Sketch' a little while ago and thought it was a great idea.

So sharpen your pencils and let's get writing!

    1. Mary/Joy - re the fb group, would you go back to the page and click on the 'join' button. Once you make the request any member of the page can add you. I don't see either or your requests. Sry for the technical difficulties, hopefully your second try will work!

  2. I'm waffling between 2 stories that I've already drafted. It will be interesting to see how either develops, but I'm mostly concerned about which one will work with my level of drawing skill, which is not quite beginner but not quite skilled. It's very exciting, though, and thanks for the links. Is there conversation about it on twitter yet? I haven't joined or used twitter at all. Like Mary, I requested to join the facebook, but haven't heard anything. Anyway, THANKS!

    2. Joy, I haven't started a twitter chat yet. The #kidlitart tweet chat used to be weekly - Thursday evenings at 7MST. Once we get to step 3 I think it willbe helpful for our group to restart those tweet chats. It seems like there are a few of us who haven't used twitter so in the next couple of weeks I'll post a blog entry on how to participate in the twitter chats. In the meantime you might want to sign-up for an account on twitter - you might what to think of a fun 'handle', mine is @sneaksncrayons. Search #kidlitart and #PBDummy, search the tweets of your favorite illustrators... you'll find some interesting posts out there.

  3. Hi Lisa,
I still haven't heard anything from my request to join the FB group. At first the problem was with the new professional FB page I had created; it didn't give me an option to join. I finally figured out I had to switch identities to make the request. But now when I check the status it still says my request is pending. I don't have an option to join again, only to withdraw my request. Any advice?

    1. Joanne,I am flummoxed by this. I don't see you on the #PBDummy Challenge facebook page as pending. Is there a way to manually add someone to a group using their email address?? Anyone have a suggestion for Joanne?
