First of all, welcome to everyone who has decided to join me for the next 25 weeks. Again, if you didn't see my blog post last night, I have made an official 'unofficial' badge for us if you are into badges and would like to put one on your blog.
Next, Step One: Pick Your Project
For those of you joining me on this challenge, you may already have a clear idea for your project. I am excited to start a picture book idea that was sprung during Tara Lazar's 2012 PiBoIDMo challenge.
If you need some help coming up with an idea, Tara Lazar has put together some great lists- 500+ things that kids like and 79+ things kids don't like which might get your creative juices flowing.
Additional Inspiration:

Caldecott winners, 1938-present
SCBWI Golden Kite winners, 1974-present
Note: Awards for picture book text were added in 1997.

Struggling to find an idea?
Check out the series of posts hosted by Tara Lazar during the PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) Challenge (November, 2010), and the posts during last year’s NaPiBoWriWee (National Picture Book Writing Week), hosted by Paula Yoo.

Here are three books which have excellent overviews on what makes an engaging picture book:
Writing with Pictures: How to Write and Illustrate Children’s Books, by Uri Shulevitz
Writing Picture Books: A Hands-On Guide From Story Creation to Publication, by Ann Whitford Paul
The Writer’s Guide to Crafting Stories for Childen, by Nancy Lamb
And if you have not signed up yet, would you please make a comment here so we know that you are joining us for the challenge?

Not sure if I'm signed up so I'm leaving a comment, I defiantly want to join.

DeleteHi Lisa, I am going to sign up also. I am not a writer but I can work on my project from Mark's class. I think this will be fun and motivating.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really fun challenge Amy, welcome.
DeleteIn my attempt to keep the maintenance of this challenge simple, please note that most of the reference materials are those from the kidlitart blog that Wendy and Bonnie have been more than happy for us to reference.
ReplyDeleteHowever, tonight as I was reviewing some of the links I realized that I should update the links to show the best of 2011 and 2012. So this evening those have been updated with the exception of the NY Times best of 2012 which for some reason kept crashing my internet. So you'll have to google that one yourselves. :)
As of tonight we have 22 participants!! What a great group.
ReplyDeleteJust catching up on my emails so just jumping on board tonight with an idea I wanted to explore that just came to me to day!!!
